MILK PRICE REVIEW January 2025
January 2025 Milk Prices Remain Stable, Marking a 15% Increase from January 2024
The average calculated milk price for January 2025 is €50.90 per 100 kg of standard milk, nearly unchanged from December 2024. This represents a more than 15% increase compared to January 2024.
Due to the low season and limited milk payment statements, the milk prices for Irish dairy company Tirlan (Glanbia) and French company Savencia were based on publicly available data, while Kerry’s price was derived from December figures.
Since October 2023, milk prices have been rising, but in January 2025, several companies reported a decrease in prices compared to December 2024. However, the overall average should be viewed cautiously, as some data is based on December’s calculated prices. The US saw an increase in its calculated milk price, driven primarily by higher protein levels.
EU Milk Supply Growth Slows in December; Global Production Trends Mixed in 2024
Ireland leading the growth. Ireland’s increase was partly a recovery from a sharp decline last year. France experienced a decline for the first time in nearly a year due to the bluetongue outbreak, while Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands also saw reductions. Overall, EU milk supply increased by 0.8% in 2024.
Milk production trends in other major dairy-exporting countries were mixed.
New Zealand saw continued growth (+1.4%), while Argentina and Uruguay experienced strong recoveries (+4.4% and +3.1%, respectively). In contrast, Australia (-1.0%) and the US (-0.5%) reported declines. Overall, total milk production from the major dairy exporters (including the EU) increased by 0.4% in 2024 compared to 2023. (including the EU) was up 0.3% year-to-date through November.
Butter and Skimmed Milk Powder Prices Dip as Market Weakens in February
Butter and skimmed milk powder prices saw slight declines in February. The FMD outbreak in Germany in mid-January had little impact on the dairy market, which was mainly driven by regular supply and demand. Butter prices were pressured by a slightly larger supply, particularly from Eastern Europe, but the market has since stabilized. Skimmed milk powder prices remained stable in January before dropping slightly in February, with weaker market conditions and disappointing demand, especially in export markets.
